KnoxBox Rapid Entry System
Big Sky Fire Department (BSFD) is providing beneficial information regarding the installation of a KnoxBox on private residences. A KnoxBox is a rapid entry system for the fire department to access your home. It is only used in case of an emergency. It reduces response time, property damage and liability for lost keys. If you have a home in Big Sky that is not always inhabited you should have a KnoxBox. The KnoxBox is a safe located on the front of a home that contains a master key to the home. This box can only be accessed by BSFD and nobody else, including Law Enforcement, property managers, or other fire departments. This ensures that access is only granted to BSFD in a potential emergency. KnoxBox keys are strictly accounted for and issued to an individual that routinely verifies the key is in their possession and locked up.
Why Install a KnoxBox on Your Home?
The benefit of a KnoxBox is to protect your home and grant BSFD access if there is an emergency. BSFD could be dispatched to a home for medical emergencies, activated alarms, and wildland fires. Depending on the nature of the incident, if nobody is home and contact cannot be made, firefighters will still make entry into the home to ensure the protection of life and property. The KnoxBox provides immediate entry, reducing delays and could minimize potential damage from gas leaks, broken water pipes, and sprinkler system issues.
Protecting Your Home and Supporting Firefighters
The KnoxBox will pay for itself the first time BSFD will need to access a vacant home. It is in BSFD’s best interest to inform, educate, and provide the community with the latest and most accurate information. Installing a KnoxBox helps protect firefighters and gives homeowners peace of mind that their home is being cared for.
What to keep in the KnoxBox that will benefit BSFD and the homeowner:
- Master key or keys to the home, mechanical rooms, and any locked other locked doors
- Laminated card or paper in a ziplock including:
- Information for all means of access such as Door keypad codes and garage door codes
- Alarm company contact and alarm panel codes
- Sprinkler contractor contact
- Homeowner and Property Manager contact
